Cholera spreads to a fourth province in Angola

Luanda, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) The confirmation today of two cases of cholera in Malanje mark the extension of the outbreak of the disease to a fourth province of Angola, after the cases registered in Luanda, Bengo, and Icolo and Bengo.

The provincial director of Health in Malanje, José Riveiro, explained to Angola Public Television that so far the two patients are stable and are people linked to the outbreaks in Luanda.

Since the identification of the first patients on January 7, the country has registered 535 cases of the disease, ranging in age from 2 to 76 years, as well as 28 deaths.

The actions of the Ministry of Health and other agencies seek to control the cholera outbreak by March, as April is a month of increased rainfall, one of the elements contributing to the spread of the disease.

The Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutucuta, noted the work carried out in the establishment of campaign centers for the treatment of patients, health promotion, the supply of drinking water, the elimination of garbage centers, and the early treatment of cases.

The acquisition of the vaccine is also being negotiated, for which contacts with the countries producing the immunogen are at an advanced stage, and the vaccine is expected to be applied in the first phase to children under five years of age.
