French political leader doubts Netanyahu’s will for peace

Paris, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) The leader of La France Insoumise (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, showed today doubts about the respect by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to the cease-fire agreed with the Palestinian militia Hamas and said he fears the continuity of violence.

We have a duty of optimism for the cessation of hostilities, however, we also have bad feelings. Netanyahu did not keep his word in Lebanon and Syria, he wrote on his X account.

The cease-fire negotiated for the Israeli-ravaged Gaza Strip came into force Sunday, an agreement that includes the release of hostages held by Hamas since Oct. 7, 2023, and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Mélenchon reiterated the demand for the creation of a Palestinian state, which he considered indispensable for a lasting peace.

The leftist leader denounced the hostility of Netanyahu, whom he accused of “having the habit of invading his neighbors”.

France, through its Foreign Ministry, welcomed the cease-fire in Gaza and demanded the release of the hostages and the increase of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory subjected to 15 months of bombardment, with more than 60 percent of its civilian infrastructure destroyed.
