Private water project rejected in Uruguay

Montevideo, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) Social, environmental, and academic organizations here rejected a hydraulic project promoted by the Uruguayan government with a private consortium to supply water to the metropolitan area of this capital.

More than 150 groups signed an open letter addressed to President Luis Lacalle Pou and the Minister of the Environment, Robert Bouvier, requesting that the signing of the contract for the Arazati project be stopped.

The letter expresses concerns about the legality, environmental impact, and human rights which have generated divisions in public opinion and misgivings of the future Frente Amplio government.

Nahir Curbelo, spokeswoman for the collective “Nodo Aquí el Neptuno, No!”, underlined to the media La R, the opposition for its alleged unconstitutionality.

According to Curbelo, “Article 47 of the Constitution states that access to water is a human right and should be managed exclusively by the State.”

She said the plan “delegates water management to a private consortium, which violates fundamental principles of our Constitution.”

In addition, she noted that the investment of 900 million dollars committed for the implementation of the project will generate significant debt for the country for 20 years, with costs that could increase due to interest.

It is an unjustifiable expense for a country already facing economic challenges. We cannot allow access to water to be subordinated to private and for-profit interests,” she said.
