This figure was released on the eve of a visit to Syria by UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi.
UNHCR has stepped up its support for returnees to Syria and the host communities and estimated that over 550,000 Syrians have returned home in 2024, with Aleppo governorate receiving the largest share, about 23 percent of the returnees.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011, millions of Syrians have left their country, fleeing the conflict, the economic crisis, and the dire humanitarian situation.
Turkiye, which shares a more-than-900-kilometer border with Syria, hosted some 2.9 million Syrian refugees since 2011.
