Dominican Republic calls US withdrawal from climate accord a setback

Santo Domingo, Jan 21 (Prensa Latina) Former Dominican Environment Minister Francisco Dominguez today considered the decision of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to withdraw his country from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change to be a "worrying setback."

Dominguez said this measure affects global efforts to stop global warming and increases risk for countries like the Dominican Republic.

He argued that higher temperatures, more intense storms, coastal erosion and the loss of biodiversity that threaten the future are proof that climate change is a reality that we live every day.

For this reason, the former minister considered it essential that all nations assume their commitment to this global challenge. He recalled that the Dominican Republic is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and warned that factors such as rising sea levels, more aggressive hurricanes and prolonged droughts affect the economy, food security and the lives of thousands of citizens.

“Our country depends on beach tourism, but coastal erosion and rising sea levels threaten this source of income. In addition, many communities live near rivers that, with heavy rains, overflow and cause serious damage,” he warned.

The former minister noted that, despite the risks, adaptation measures have been insufficient. Deforestation continues, coastal ecosystems are in danger and many communities remain exposed to natural disasters without adequate infrastructure.

According to the former official, the Dominican Republic needs stronger policies to protect its forests, rivers and coasts because otherwise the costs will be increasingly higher.

He urged strengthening environmental commitments and continuing to work together to confront climate change. He stressed that each nation has the responsibility to reduce its environmental impact and protect natural resources.

The day before, US President Donald Trump signed a decree to withdraw his country for the second time from the Paris Agreement, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming.

The measure, announced by Trump on the first day of his government, represents a blow to global efforts to combat global warming, experts estimate.

The president withdrew the United States from this pact in his first administration (2017-2021), but his successor Joe Biden returned the country to the agreement.

The United States is one of the main emitters of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
