Peruvian political leader condemns new US aggression against Cuba

Lima, Jan 22 (Prensa Latina) Peruvian political leader Verónika Mendoza on Wednesday condemned the announcement made by the newly installed president of the United States, Donald Trump, to reinsert Cuba on Washington's State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.

The former congresswoman and former presidential candidate spoke out about the measure taken by Trump days after his predecessor, Joseph Biden, gave in to the world’s outcry and ordered Cuba to be removed from the arbitrary and illegal list.

“It is truly outrageous to see how successive US governments use the Cuba issue as a distraction, as a lesson or as a scapegoat, but never with respect for its sovereignty and even less with concern for its people,” she told Prensa Latina.

She added that if it were a matter of justice, “not only would Cuba have been removed from that list, but all unilateral sanctions that block Cuba’s economic possibilities, harm lives and truncate the dreams of its people would have been annulled.”

Mendoza pointed out that the Trump administration is not only adverse to Cuba, but “now intends to treat Latin America as its backyard again.”

In light of this, she called for unity among the democratic and progressive governments in the region to reject these claims.
