Colombian President completes his agenda in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Jan 23 (Patina Latina) The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, today completes his work agenda in the Haitian town of Jacmel, in the southeastern part of the nation.

A cooperation protocol is scheduled to be signed between Port-au-Prince and Bogota covering trade, education, security and humanitarian aid.

Petro and the delegation accompanying him will visit the iron market of Jacmel, the Simon Bolivar square and the historic house where the Liberator lived during his trip to the city in the 19th century.

The day before, Petro asked forgiveness to the people of Haiti for the assassination of the dignitary Jovenel Moise, carried out by mercenaries of his country in 2021, while describing it as a macabre event.

I am here to ask for your forgiveness, because Colombians dark in their heart, white in their skin, brown as mercenaries with interests in the U.S. territory of Florida, decided to come to these lands to kill, the dignitary said.

“I ask your forgiveness because I do not want to come to these lands to relive history,” the statesman said.

Haiti played an important role in the independence process of Gran Colombia, since it hosted the liberator Simón Bolívar, in the well-known expedition of Los Cayos.

“That is why I am here, to thank you, first of all, for having helped us in our freedom,” he said.

Haiti and Colombia have maintained diplomatic and friendly relations since 1820.
