Such an operation would be possible under the cover of a joint declaration initialed last June, where both parties announced the decision to deploy US firepower in this country by 2026, including SM-6 missiles, Tomahawk and hypersonic weapons that have a longer range than the missiles currently stationed in Europe.
Signatories include the leader of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance-For Reason and Justice (BSW); politician and president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Council, Margot Kässmann; and scientist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker.
On the eve of the Bundestag (German parliament) elections, the peace movement activists and scientists who signed the letter are calling for the deployment of U.S. medium-range weapons in Germany to be prevented.
The candidates (for the office of chancellor) should also not allow the country’s participation in the development of European medium-range weapons, the document states.
