Syrian Foreign Minister urges lifting of sanctions in Davos

Damascus, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Sheibani said his country faces many economic challenges and called on the international community to lift sanctions to begin the process of rebuilding the new Syria.

This position, disseminated in the Syrian press, was expressed by the head of diplomacy in a dialogue session with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Syria and its economic future, during the Davos Economic Forum in Switzerland.

The biggest challenge we face is sanctions and their suspension is the key to stability in Syria, the Foreign Minister said.

He added that if the world wants Syria to emerge from the tragedy, it must support the dreams of the Syrian people.

Syrians face many challenges, but we have many investment opportunities, and the Syrian economy will be open to foreign partnerships and investments, he said. Al-Shaibani spoke about the political vision of the new Syrian administration, its aspirations in the current phase and the management of the political transition process the country is going through.

He considered the current security situation in Syria to be acceptable given the 14 years of war and stressed that the Syrian people did not allow themselves to be dragged into sectarian conflicts.

Syrians now have many aspirations and ambitions after being subjected to an existential war and the tragedy they had previously lived through would never be repeated, the politician said.

Regarding the political process, Al-Shaibani explained that Syria will be governed by the rule of law and the constitution. “Our vision is committed to the participation of all Syrians, without any exception, in shaping the future of the country,” he said.
