The Sudanese armed forces have been engaging in a fight against the so-called Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since Wednesday, aimed at extending their control over those strategic areas in the hands of the paramilitary forces.
Eyewitnesses reported heavy plumes of smoke covering the entrance to Khartoum and Army forces controlling the approaches to the capital.
The al-Jili oil refinery, other areas and districts in Khartoum, and large areas in western Sudan have been under RSF control since fighting erupted.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in an internal war, following a power struggle between Army Chief, General Abdel Fatah al-Burhan, and RSF leader, General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, after the country suffered military coups d’Etat in 2019 and 2021.
