According to the website www.tvyumuri.cu, dizziness, shortness of breath and redness in some students led to the rapid mobilization of all staff at the institution and its temporary closure.
So far, 22 students have been transferred and treated at the Eliseo Noel Caamaño Children’s Hospital, 12 of whom are in the respiratory ward, six are under observation and four are in the intermediate therapy ward. All of them remain stable.
The general director of Education in Matanzas, Edilberto Casanova, explained that the rest of the students from the center are fine and are on their way home, while it was decided to postpone the educational process until Saturday.
According to local media, the leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), the Government, Provincial Education authorities and experts from the Ministry of the Interior are assessing the situation at the school to determine the substance and source of the gas leak.
PCC First Secretary in Matanzas Mario Sabines and Governor Marieta Poey are at the Children’s Hospital, where they are in contact with doctors, the affected students and their families.
