India to launch 1st human underwater submersible this year

New Delhi, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) India is set to launch the first human underwater submersible this year to operate at a depth of up to 5,000 meters, informed Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology.

Speaking at the second meeting of the Mission Steering Committee of the Deep Ocean Mission, Singh announced that the initial submersible will reach a staging depth of 6,000 meters by 2026.

The minister considered the event as a significant aspect of advancing India’s scientific capabilities and boosting a blue economy.

He highlighted the mission will position India among a six-nation group with the technological prowess to undertake such an ambitious endeavor.

The Indian minister underscored the government’s support for the Deep Ocean Mission, which has the potential to unlock vast resources, including critical minerals, rare metals, and biodiversity, all of which are essential to the country’s economic growth and environmental sustainability.
