“The United States cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. The United States must establish a protocol for the dignified treatment of migrants before we receive them,” Petro wrote on his X account.
Petro’s statement came as it is estimated that a mass repatriation of irregular migrants in the United States will occur, as stated by President Donald Trump.
Recently, Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo noted that after the change of administration in Washington, the United States might increase the frequency of migrant repatriation flights to Colombia.
Both countries have agreed to carry out up to eight weekly flights and currently four are being used, but with the policy defended by the new US president, that the quota is expected to be filled.
The Colombian head of State has urged the White House on other occasions to maintain a constructive exchange with the rest of the countries, especially with those in the region, despite the differences that may exist among them.
