President Aoun reaffirms army’s commitment to Lebanon

Beirut, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) The President of the Republic of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, on Sunday reaffirmed the army's commitment to the security and protection of citizens, in light of Israel's violations of the truce agreement.

Commenting on the return of southern residents to border villages after the 60-day deadline for Israel’s withdrawal, the president said, “Together we will continue to be stronger, united under the flag of Lebanon.”

Aoun stressed that Lebanon’s sovereignty and the unity of its territory are not negotiable, and called for calm and trust in the Lebanese Armed Forces.

The head of State assured the monitoring of Israel’s aggressions at the highest levels to guarantee the rights and dignity of residents.

Considering a day a victory for Lebanon, the president insisted on national unity and the right to defend sovereignty.

“As I share with you this great joy, I ask you for restraint and trust in the Lebanese armed forces, committed to protecting our sovereignty, our security and ensuring your safe return to your homes and villages,” he added.

According to the ceasefire brokered by the United States and France, Israel has to withdraw its forces within 60 days, a deadline that expired today, while the Lebanese army and UNIFIL strengthen their presence in the area, in accordance with United Nations Resolution 1701.

However, Israel did not comply with the withdrawal of its forces from the occupied land at this stage and violated the agreement by raiding and detonating villages in the south.

Despite Israel’s warnings, residents in the south began to return and were attacked by gunfire from the occupation army.

In a preliminary assessment, the Ministry of Health confirmed 11 dead and 83 wounded as a result of Israel’s attacks on the inhabitants of southern Lebanon.
