During her usual press conference, the head of State said that she had asked Secretary of Foreign Affairs Juan Ramon de la Fuente to inquire about how the meeting is planned.
“I asked the Foreign secretary to find out exactly (…) We are going to see how the CELAC meeting is planned and if I would participate personally or through the Foreign secretary or some other colleague, to see what are the considerations of this meeting,” she noted.
In statements to local radio, Honduran Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Torres ratified on Monday that the meeting of the regional organization’s leaders will be take place on Thursday in a hybrid format.
Several countries, including Brazil and Colombia, have expressed their disagreement with the deportation mechanism implemented by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, who hours after his inauguration a week ago declared a national emergency on the south border.
Migrants are transported in military planes, handcuffed and treated as if they were criminals, Torres denounced.
According to Honduran authorities, the CELAC meeting will seek to articulate efforts among members to guarantee respect for the human rights of these people, while exploring alternatives to manage migration flows in an effective and humanitarian manner.
