The main objectives of the operation are the stabilization of the territory to allow the return of displaced people to their homes and the advancement of an offensive against the structures operating in that area, such as the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the 33rd Front, a residual structure of the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces-People’s Army.
According to the Ministry of Defense, 9,352 uniformed personnel are currently on the ground and a first combat against the ELN has already taken place.
The Ministry also revealed that over 47,000 people have been displaced by the insecurity situation in Catatumbo, of which 18,838 are in shelters.
It also detailed that 619 civilians were evacuated by the forces of law and order, and more than 100 members of the armed groups surrendered.
Although the remains of 41 fatal victims of the conflict were taken to Legal Medicine, local authorities estimate that the figure is higher.
The Ombudsman’s Office, for example, reported that another 17 people died in fighting between the ELN and the 33rd Front in the municipality of Teorama, some of whom were adolescents who were recruited.
It denounced that the whereabouts of 12 peace signatories are still unknown, while nearly 24,000 Colombians remain confined.
