Sri Lanka and Cuba hold talks on reactivation of parliamentary group

Colombo, Jan 27 (Prensa Latina) Ambassador Andres Gonzalez and Parliament Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne today discussed the historical ties between the two countries and the reactivation of the Sri Lanka-Cuba Friendship Association in the Legislative.

At the fraternal meeting, the Cuban diplomat handed a congratulatory letter, sent by the President of the National People’s Power Assembly of Cuba, Esteban Lazo, to Wickramaratne, on his recent appointment.

Gonzalez also informed about Cuba’s recent denunciation of the decision of the new U.S. government to reestablish the iron economic war measures against the Cuban people with the reincorporation of Cuba in the spurious list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.

Wickramaratne, a medical doctor by profession, was elected on December 17, 2024 president of the 225-member Sri Lankan Parliament.

Following the installation of the new government in Sri Lanka last year, Cuban Ambassador Andres Gonzalez has held talks with top Sri Lankan figures such as President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuri, and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath on the possibility of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in various sectors.
