Brazilian government to discuss the US mistreatment of deportees

Brazilian president, ministers to discuss mistreatment of deportees

Brasilia, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will discuss again the situation of Brazilians deported from the United States after analyzing the issue with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on Monday.

Justice and Public Security Minister Ricardo Lewandoski and Defense Minister José Múcio Monteiro will meet to discuss suspicions of mistreatment of Brazilian nationals.

According to CNN Brasil, Vieira informed da Silva about what he heard from delegate Sávio Pinzón, interim superintendent of the Federal Police in the state of Amazonas, and Brigadier Major Ramiro Pinheiro, commander of the Seventh Regional Air Command, when a plane carrying 88 deportees arrived in Manaus. The foreign minister also presented the president with data on other flights of Brazilians expelled from the United States.

The government is studying how to request explanations from the United States about the treatment given to the deportees. The government is waiting for the Brazilians’ statements to the Federal Police. The points to question Washington refer to the treatment given to the Brazilians, which includes the choice of the plane, which presented technical problems, as well as the flight crew. The fact that the deportees were handcuffed and chained on national soil when they landed in Manaus due to the technical failure of the aircraft was also considered inadmissible.

The government said that the handcuffs on board the flight were not the problem, since the risk assessment corresponds to the American crew responsible for the transport, and is part of the deportation agreement signed by the two countries in 2018.

A preliminary assessment revealed that persons without the necessary training to handle the situation had supervised the flight.

Brazil called the incident unacceptable and will request an explanation from the United States on the treatment of its citizens during the first deportation flight under President Donald Trump.
