DRC president to address nation on crisis in east of the country

Kinshasa, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, will address the nation on the security crisis in the east of the country due to the aggression of the March 23 Movement (M23), announced government sources.

An inter-institutional meeting took place on Monday, chaired by the head of state, which focused on evaluating the situation in the province of North Kivu after the advance of the M23 on Goma, the capital, which was the main topic of the president’s speech, said the president of the National Assembly, Vital Kamerhe.

The possible solutions to the crisis, including political and diplomatic aspects were explored during the meeting, which saw the participation of the presidents of the Senate and the National Assembly, the prime minister, and the attorney general at the Court of Cassation representing the president of the Constitutional Court.

The restoration of state authority in North Kivu and humanitarian issues such as supplying electricity and water to Goma, a city of around two million inhabitants, were discussed.

“On behalf of the President of the Republic, we would like to congratulate the people of North Kivu, the brave fighters of the Armed Forces, and the volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland, the Wazalendo, who continue to resist heroically in the face of enormous pressure and deserve all our support,” Kamerhe said.

The situation is complex in Goma, where on Monday the M23, supported by Rwanda, entered the city and practically took control of it but, according to Radio Okapi, there are still pockets of resistance. The rebels once had control of the facilities of the national channel RTNC, which was later recovered by the Congolese army.

Several neighborhoods in Goma have been without water and electricity since Friday 24 January following damage to the power lines of the National Electricity Company, which links Bukavu to Goma, and to the Virunga Energie power lines, which supplies the city from the Matebe power station in Rutshuru.

Various demonstrations have been recorded in the DRC in protest against the M23 aggression in the east of the country, mainly in South Kivu, North Kivu and Kinshasa.
