Friends of Cuba in the U.S. celebrate Jose Marti’s birth anniversary

Washington, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) Friends of Cuba in the United States remembered today the 172nd anniversary of the birth of National Hero Jose Marti, and together with the staff of Cuban Embassy in this capital dedicated flowers to him.

The white roses were placed at the foot of the statue of Marti at the entrance of the diplomatic Mission, located on the central and well-known 16th Street in Washington, D.C.

All expressed their respect for the Apostle of the Independence whose ideology will continue to guide present and future generations, as expressed on behalf of their group by young diplomat Gabriela Castillo.

The event was led by the head of the Cuban Mission in the United States, Lianys Torres.

The Cuban Embassy’s program to celebrate the birth of the Apostle also included a meeting with students from a local elementary school, as well as the awarding of a contest dedicated to Marti and a harp concert by Sarah-Mari Ramson specially prepared for the occasion.

Jose Marti was born in Havana on January 28, 1853.

He was a Cuban of universal projection who surpassed the frontiers of the era in which he lived to become the greatest Latin American political thinker of the 19th century.

His birthday was also remembered in other U.S. cities -where Marti lived for 15 years-, such as Baltimore, Detroit and New York, where the Cuban Permanent Mission to the UN laid a wreath at the equestrian statue of the Apostle in Central Park.
