South Africa and Rwanda presidents committed to peace in DRC

Pretoria, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, held a telephone conversation on the intensified conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to a presidential communiqué released here today, “The two heads of state agreed on the urgent need for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks between all parties to the conflict.”

The high-level talks came after the South African National Defense Force (Sandf) confirmed that in the last seven days 13 of its members have been killed in the DRC.

A Sandf statement indicated that following an exchange of mortar shells between the Congolese Defense Forces and members of the M23 armed group on Monday near the Goma airport, where the Sandf base is located, three soldiers were caught in the crossfire and killed, although they were not directly involved in the fighting.

In addition, it added, one of its members who “was wounded during the battle with the M23 rebels in the last three days” later succumbed.

The rest of the wounded South Africans continue to receive medical attention at the “Goma Level 3 Hospital”, the information said.

For the time being, the DRC government has announced that the national army now controls most of Goma.

However, M23 spokesmen maintain that they are in charge of the city.
