He told the press this after a transition meeting with the outgoing presidential secretary, Rodrigo Ferres, in which he received documentation on the arbitrations before the World Bank’s International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
Of the five disputes, two are related to the Aratiri mining company for the open-pit extraction of iron ore and the construction of a deep-water port, a project that began in 2011 but did not come to fruition.
In August 2020 Uruguay won a lawsuit against the transnational company Zamin Ferrous, which had to pay the State close to four million dollars.
But in March 2023, an appeals court reversed the initial ruling in favor of Uruguay.
This case continues its legal course, with no final resolutions so far.
Uruguay’s international disputes are in different procedural stages, said Lopez.
In the resolution phase is the one linked to the former flag carrier, Pluna, for which the Uruguayan State agreed to pay a compensatory sum next February after a settlement agreement.
Former prosecutor Jorge Diaz said there are two other lawsuits that have just started and of which he preferred not to give details.
