By mutual agreement with the parents of the minor Elizabeth Struhs, members of the religious sect The Saints, to which the family belonged, refused for several days to inject the girl with insulin, under the belief that God could cure everything.
The girl suffered from type 1 diabetes and during the trial, in the Queensland Supreme Court, it was heard that while she was in agony, instead of providing her with life-saving medication, family and members of the sect dedicated themselves to praying for her to heal through prayer.
The death occurred on January 7, 2022, at a home in the town, about 125 kilometres west of Brisbane.
The court heard that police were not called until more than 24 hours after the death because they believed in the possibility of bringing Elizabeth back to life through prayer.
The defendants refused legal representation and on Wednesday 14 were found guilty of manslaughter. They are now awaiting sentencing.
