“The Syrian people deserve a real opportunity to determine their future and this can only be achieved by suspending the remaining punitive measures, which already lead to counterproductive results that harm our people,” the Ministry said in a statement from the Foreign Ministry, and considered that such a step would pave the way for economic recovery, improve access to basic services and consolidate long-term stability in the region.
“We reiterate our commitment to continue working with our partners to ensure that all unilateral coercive measures are lifted, and in this way allow the Syrian people to prosper and regain their rightful place in a region of peace and prosperity,” the Ministry concluded.
Earlier, the foreign minister of the interim government, Asaad Al-Sheibani, welcomed the decision of the European Union to revocably lift sanctions imposed on Syria for one year. “This decision is a positive step and I hope that it will have a positive impact on all aspects of the Syrian people’s lives and promote sustainable development,” the foreign minister wrote on X.
EU foreign ministers reached a political agreement to ease sanctions imposed on Damascus, although on a revocable basis, to be reapplied if the new leaders take steps deemed unfavorable.
The spokeswoman for the German Foreign Ministry for the Middle East and North Africa region, Annika Klazen Idris, said that the decision of the European Union to suspend some sanctions imposed on Syria offers room to support the Syrian people. “The European Union has decided to lift the sanctions imposed in the areas of energy, aviation, and finance, and in this manner, we are giving the Syrian people larger room for recovery,” Idris wrote on X, adding that Germany has called for and pushed for this step, and in this way, the European Union is showing its unity and determination on an important political issue.
