The protest was called by the National Movement for Energy Democracy (MODEN) and will be joined by labor unions, teachers, students, social organizations, and the general community.
“We will meet in the streets of Barranquilla on January 30th, 2025. We recognize the streets as our natural space for debate in the struggles for our rights and demands. On the pavement we will demand a fair energy rate and energy democracy,” MODEN announced in its call.
The president of the Central Unitary Workers in the Atlántico department, Henry Gordon, said that the mobilization will include delegations from different regions of the Colombian Caribbean. He also stated that the Government has the will to lower electricity rates, but it faces obstacles due to speculation and the market dynamics of the generators.
The president of the Union of Workers of the Atlantic, Oscar Echeverría, revealed that they will support the mobilization to request that energy be less expensive for customers in that region.
In addition to the organizations mentioned, the Association of Educators of the Atlantic, the District Association of Educators of Barranquilla, and unions of pensioners confirmed their participation in the protest.
President Petro assured that he would attend to denounce the illegal electricity rates as the tariff regime approved by the Commission for the Regulation of Energy and Gas of the country is not being implemented.
