Latin American and Caribbean Economic Forum debates poverty reduction

Panama City, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) One of the panels of the first Latin American and Caribbean Economic Forum in Panama is focused on sustained and inclusive growth and its impact on poverty reduction.

Other topics of the workshops and conferences with the participation of global leaders and businessmen from 15 nations will revolve around the role of ports and logistics, the participation of women in decision-making areas, and the opportunities and challenges of Panama for its sustainable development, among other issues.

On Wednesday, the experts discussed the advances of recent years in biodiversity and climate action, in addition to agreeing on the region’s interests in presenting new solutions at COP 30, which will be held at the end of this year in Belém, Brazil.

In the discussion entitled “From Cali to Belém: Latin America and the Caribbean, a key player in global climate action,” Alicia Montalvo, manager of Climate Action and Positive Biodiversity at the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), highlighted that the region has shown to have an influential voice, especially in matters of climate change, energy transition and protection of biodiversity.

For his part, the Minister of Environment of Panama, Juan Carlos Navarro, called attention to the magnitude of the challenge of facing the climate crisis, which is becoming increasingly urgent.

At the inauguration of the event, which will be held annually in Panama, the President of the country, José Raúl Mulino, praised the motto “How to get back on the growth path” and commented on the enormous challenge of guaranteeing a present State, because not everything can be left to the mercy of the market. During his speech, he said he was convinced that this regional forum is the ideal setting to cultivate greater friendship and also to find and expand the mechanisms that drive the economy and prosperity.

The head of CAF, Colombian Sergio Díaz-Granados, recapitulated the integrationist history of the region and pointed out that Panama unites geography, but also culture and its world-class logistics.
