Eight Angolan provinces register cholera cases

Luanda, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) Angola registers today cholera cases in eight of the 21 provinces of the country, with an accumulated since January 7 to date of 54 deaths and 1,372 suspected cases of the disease.

The provinces of Zaire and Cuanza Norte are the most recent incorporations to the expansion of the disease, which is already present in Luanda, Bengo, Icolo and Bengo, Malanje, Huila, and Huambo.

Yesterday was the day with the highest number of identified cases, with 92 infections in the country. The Health Ministry (Minsa) reported that 185 people were admitted with cholera in various institutions.

Luanda remains the epicenter, with a figure of 893 people ill since the beginning of the outbreak. This situation led to a meeting between the Provincial Government of Luanda and Minsa, to outline effective strategies to contain the epidemic.

The Health Minister, Silvia Lutucuta, and the governor, Luis Nunes, led the meeting intending to reinforce actions to control the spread of the disease and mitigate its impact on the most vulnerable populations.

According to health authorities, it is urgent to contain the spread of the disease before the arrival of April, to prevent the rains from making the situation even more complex.
