Russia responds to Trump’s threats on Brics tariffs

Moscow, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) Russia's presidential spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, assured today that the Brics member countries are not discussing the creation of a common currency, but are talking about new investment platforms.

The Kremlin spokesman’s statement comes in response to recent threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent for allegedly attempting by Brics nations to create an alternative currency to the dollar.

“Here we should remember the words of our President Vladimir Putin, which are much more important and significant for us.”

The fact is the Brics are not talking about creating a common currency. “There has been no talk and there is no talk of creating a common currency,’ Peskov stressed.

In this regard, the press chief of the Russian Presidency clarified that the integrationist bloc “is talking about creating new joint investment platforms that would allow joint investments in third countries, mutual investments.”

“Apparently, experts have to explain in more detail to Mr. Trump the Brics agenda”, the official emphasized.

Previously, the White House occupant warned that the association’s countries would face maximum tariffs if they try to undermine the dollar and seek to impose a new currency.

“There is no chance of the Brics replacing the U.S. dollar in international trade, or anywhere else.

And “any country that tries to do so should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to the U.S.!” the president wrote on his social networks.
