Israel kills elderly man in Jenin, 25 Palestinians killed in 13 days

Ramallah, 2 February (Prensa Latina) - Israeli soldiers killed a 73-year-old Palestinian man today during operations against the West Bank city of Jenin and its neighbouring refugee camp, bringing the death toll to 25 in 13 days.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said Walid Muhammad Ali Lakhul was shot this morning and his body was taken to hospital by Red Crescent ambulances.

The official Wafa news agency reported that Israeli forces continued to tighten their grip on the area, sending in more soldiers and armoured vehicles.

At the same time, uniformed forces intensified the demolition of buildings in several neighbourhoods of the camp, where more than a hundred houses were demolished, the source said.

Tel Aviv considers the two towns as strongholds of Palestinian militias and have been targeted by Israeli military operations for years.

In recent days, Palestinian authorities have denounced the war campaign, which has included a siege of the town’s main hospitals, numerous arrests and raids.

Jenin’s governor, Kamal Abu Al-Rub, criticised the offensive and accused the neighbouring country of planning the complete destruction of the region.

He said Israel had taken advantage of the ceasefire in Gaza to move its troops into the West Bank.

The occupation forces are attacking everything in Jenin,’ said Abu Al-Rub, who revealed that an unprecedented number of bulldozers had arrived in the area.
