Uruguayan blue helmets wounded in Congo remain hospitalized

Montevideo, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) Six blue helmets of the Uruguay 4th Battalion, wounded in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), remain hospitalized, the National Army reported.

The military report also mentions brief exchanges of fire between the Armed Forces of the DRC and the rebels of the M23, although it adds that the situation in the city of Goma, in the east of that African country, is moving to normalcy.

According to the communiqué, the day before “short clashes were heard in areas close to the town of Rusayo, but far from our base, presumably between elements of the M23 and groups apparently supporting FARDC.”

Rusayo is under M23 control like Goma, the report pointed out.

Our troops are in good condition, continuing the mission assigned to them, the army added, indicating that Sgt. Adrian Fernandez remains in intensive care at the Level 4th Hospital in Uganda.

He remains in a critical condition, but stable.

Yesterday, three of the Uruguayan soldiers underwent surgery at the hospital in Goma and are progressing favorably.

One Uruguayan soldier died on January 25 during an attack in which two others were wounded.

In the following days four other blue helmets from Uruguay were also wounded.

Authorities of the current government, President-elect Yamandu Orsi and his Defense Minister-designate, Sandra Lazo, said that their country’s contingent, under UN mandate, will continue its mission of peace and protection of the civilian population in the DRC.
