Cuba considers violent deportation of migrants unacceptable

Havana, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) For Cuba, the violent and indiscriminate deportation of migrants, arbitrary detentions and other human rights violations in the United States are unacceptable, President Miguel Díaz-Canel said on Monday.

In his virtual speech at the 12th Extraordinary Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), the Cuban head of State noted that these measures are also used as weapons of blackmail and political pressure against the peoples of “Our America.”

“The establishment of a detention center at the US Naval Base in Guantanamo, where they intend to imprison tens of thousands of people, is a barbaric act,” he condemned.

The Cuban president pointed out that building a migration perspective of peace, understanding and collaboration without politicization is an issue that requires collective and joint efforts.

He recalled that most migrants who are in the United States arrived there attracted by its economic development and to meet basic needs that the economies of their nations cannot satisfy.

“In Cuba’s particular case, the policy of the US Government of offering privileged treatment to Cuban migrants regardless of the route by which they arrive in that country is widely known, plus the impact of the economic blockade and the policy of maximum pressure,” Díaz-Canel stated.

He explained that migrants and migration flows are not a problem but a phenomenon of our times, an expression of the challenges of the international system and the prevailing unjust economic order.

Regarding the new challenges of international cooperation, derived from the executive orders of the Donald Trump administration, he noted that it is necessary to strengthen responses from the South. In this regard, he stressed that the capacity for regional agreement will be vital to demand what “rightfully belongs to us,” while urging a response with unity and the globalization of solidarity, in the face of the imperialist counteroffensive.

Within the framework of ALBA-TCP, Díaz-Canel pointed out that strengthening an economic agenda based on complementariness, which takes advantage of all the potential of each country, is a priority.

He highlighted the importance of the Alliance’s 2030 Strategic Agenda and referred to the importance of strengthening initiatives such as AgroALBA.

The Cuban president added that it is time to work in the bilateral sphere to establish modalities that contribute to increasing food production and “guaranteeing our food and nutritional security.”

The Cuban leader affirmed that it will be essential to establish maritime and air communication routes to improve the connection between the countries involved in regards to artificial intelligence.

Díaz-Canel reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to integration and collaboration in the search for the well-being of the peoples.
