Drinking water project will benefit more than 140,000 Nicaraguans

Managua, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) The Government of Nicaragua is promoting a new project to expand and improve the drinking water system in five cities, which will benefit more than 140,000 persons.

The new project will improve the quality of life of the population in the municipalities of Ocotal in the department of Nueva Segovia; Camoapa, in Boaco; Diriamba in Carazo and San Jorge and Buenos Aires, in the department of Rivas, reports the Informe Pastrán bulletin.

According to the publication, the initiative will be financed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE). The investment will guarantee greater continuity, efficiency, and service quality in these areas.

The idea is to finance four drinking water system improvements and expansions. The executing agency will be the Nicaraguan Water and Sewer Company. To this end, last week the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, authorized the Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Bruno Gallardo, to sign loan contract number 2338 with the BCIE on behalf of and representing the Sandinista Government for a total amount of 130 million dollars.

Official data indicate that, through the construction of 26 new sources of supply, the annual production of more than 27 million cubic meters of drinking water is expected, as well as the installation and rehabilitation of more than 11 thousand 700 connections in homes.

In addition, the program will generate more than 900 new jobs, which will promote economic development in the benefited areas.
