China denounces unilateralism and consequences of U.S. tariffs

Beijing, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) The imposition of tariffs by the United States is “a typical unilateralist and protectionist approach” that seriously undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system', an official source emphasized today.

According to the Trade Ministry, the U.S. administration’s decision to apply 10 percent tariffs on imported Chinese products affected the foundations of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Likewise, the portfolio denounced that this measure disrupts the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

The Ministry’s office also stated that “the United States has repeatedly nullified multilateralism with unilateralism”, which has been strongly condemned by the majority of WTO members.

Beijing also confirmed that it had filed a complaint over the issue with the World Trade Organization.

The Chinese government urged Washington to correct its decision immediately and expressed its willingness to collaborate with other WTO members to confront protectionism and ensure stable and orderly international trade.

Previously, the Asian nation had announced a range of countermeasures, including the imposition of additional tariffs on certain products imported from the United States.

Based on the official statement, starting February 10, 2025, a 15 percent customs duty will be applied to imports of coal and liquefied natural gas from the United States.

On several occasions, China expressed its willingness to hold talks to iron out frictions under the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation.
