China to expand ties with EU despite international complexity

Beijing, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) China today highlighted its relations with the European Union (EU) and expressed its willingness to expand bilateral cooperation in multiple fields to provide more stability and certainty to the world.

This was stated by Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian when asked for his opinion on recent statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The incumbent noted a potential agreement between the two sides and the possibility of expanding trade and investment relations.

In this context, Lin Jian emphasized that the international situation is undergoing an accelerated process of transformation, which gives increasing strategic importance to China-EU ties.

According to the spokesman, Beijing deeply values its relationship with Europe, considers them a fundamental part of the global strategy, and trusts the bloc to be a reliable partner in bilateral cooperation.

‘This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU,’ he recalled.

Lin expressed China’s desire to work together with the European Union to implement the main ideas agreed upon by the leaders of the two sides, celebrate the anniversary commemorative events, and foster greater understanding and strategic coordination.

He also stressed the importance of jointly addressing global challenges and promoting the positive advancement of relations between the two regions.

The statements from the European and Chinese sides come amid a complex international context due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff war.

Regarding the tariff issue, Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU has a firm response if the Republican follows through on his threats to impose duties on imports from the European bloc.

Earlier China announced the imposition of additional tariffs of up to 15 percent on certain products imported from the United States, in response to Washington’s recent decision to levy 10 percent on all Chinese goods destined for the U.S. market.

China’s authorities emphasized that the U.S. move to impose tariffs unilaterally contravenes World Trade Organization rules and harms trade and economic cooperation between the two nations.

In addition to the tariffs, Beijing opened an investigation into Alphabet’s Google, suspected of violating the country’s anti-monopoly law.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Commerce also added U.S. companies PVH Group and Illumina Inc to its list of untrustworthy entities, leading to restrictions or sanctions.
