“China consistently opposes the United States’ intervention in Cuba’s internal affairs under the pretext of “freedom,” “democracy” and “fight against terrorism,” and supports the Cuban people’s just struggle to defend their sovereignty and dignity, and their opposition to the blockade and sanctions,” the Foreign Ministry said.
In response to a question from Prensa Latina, the spokesperson’s office emphasized that Washington “is historically retreating, going deeper and deeper into the wrong path of sanctions and blockade.” It added that the United States has openly positioned itself against justice and equity, which is widely rejected by the international community.
Beijing reiterated its call for Washington to lift the total blockade against Cuba as soon as possible and remove Cuba from the list of “state sponsors of terrorism.” It also urged the US administration to do more to improve relations between Cuba and the United States and promote regional peace and stability.
In its statement, the Foreign Ministry recalled that the US blockade against Cuba for more than 60 years seriously violates international law and causes great suffering to the Cuban people.
Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reinstated the Restricted List of Cuba, a further step in the restoration of the “hard” US policy towards Cuba in the next four years.
In a statement entitled “Reestablishment of a hard US-Cuba policy,” Rubio, not only returned to that list of entities already sanctioned but added another: Orbit, S.A., a channel for sending remittances to Cuba.
During his first term (2017-2021), Trump imposed at least 243 sanctions that reinforced the blockade that weighs on the Cuban people, which characterize his government’s policy of maximum pressure against Cuba.
