Syrian and Turkish presidents agree on strategic partnership

Damascus, Feb 5 (Prensa Latina) Syrian interim president Ahmed Al-Sharaa and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyib Erdogan stressed the need to elevate relations between their countries to the level of strategic partnership in all fields.

According to the Syrian news agency SANA, this position was expressed by both heads of state during a joint press conference held at the presidential complex in Ankara after holding talks attended by the two countries’s foreign ministers.

Al-Sharaa described the relationship between the two neighboring nations as fraternal and rooted in history and geography and considered that the Syrians would not forget the support offered by Ankara. He clarified that work is underway to promote cooperation in all humanitarian, economic, cultural, and social fields, in addition to approving a joint strategy to confront security threats in the region, to ensure sustainable stability for Syria and Turkey.

“We have exchanged with President Erdogan on the threats that prevent the completion of the unity of the Syrian territory in the northeast of the country, due to the control of the Kurdish militia Syrian Democratic Forces,” said the interim president, who also urged international pressure on Israel to withdraw from the buffer zone it has occupied since early December, and reiterated Syria’s commitment to the separation of forces agreement signed in 1974.

After his statement, the Syrian president invited his Turkish counterpart to visit Damascus as soon as possible.

For his part, Erdogan said that there is a consensus between Ankara and the Syrian administration on all the issues discussed, and affirmed that his government has supported the Syrians in difficult times and will continue to do so in this new transition phase. He called Al-Sharaa’s visit to Turkey historic and declared that it marks the beginning of a stage of permanent friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

“Ankara is ready to provide the necessary support in rebuilding the destroyed cities, in fighting all forms of terrorism, and in taking joint steps to establish security and economic stability,” said the Turkish head of state, who believed that the voluntary return of refugees will gain momentum with the rapid economic development of the country.

Turkey is the first country to reopen its diplomatic mission in Damascus after the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s government. Other countries have announced similar steps, including Qatar, Libya, France, Germany, and Ukraine.
