Seychelles lawmakers reaffirm support for Cuba against US blockade

Victoria, Feb 8 (Prensa Latina) Lawmakers from Seychelles reiterated the country's unwavering historic position against the United States' blockade against Cuba, at a meeting with Deputy Cultlure Minister Lizette Martínez, who is on an official visit to this African nation on Saturday,

At a fruitful meeting with Wavel Woodcock, president of the Press, Youth, Sports and Culture Committee and vice president of the International Relations Commission of the Parliament of Seychelles, the legislators made it clear that they will continue to support Cuba in the African Union and the United Nations General Assembly, according to diplomatic sources.

Before the general secretary of the Institute of Culture of Seychelles, David André, among other officials, Martínez conveyed greetings from the president of the National People’s Power Assembly, Esteban Lazo.

She also extended an invitation from Lazo to the President of the National Assembly of Seychelles, Roger Mancienne, to pay an official visit to Cuba, and

Martínez also expressed gratitude for the support from the Parliament of Seychelles, mainly from opposition leader Sebastien Pillay, to the international denunciation of Cuba’s presence on the arbitrary and illegal list of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT).

Both parties agreed on the importance of strengthening interparliamentary ties and committed to continuing to strengthen contacts between the respective Friendship Groups and at events.

The parliamentarians from Seychelles acknowledged Cuba’s development in various areas, particularly culture and sports. They agreed on the need to support from Parliament the implementation of the Cooperation Agreement in the field of Physical Education and Sport, signed in 2024, especially to promote the development of sport in Seychelles, the training of athletes and the training of coaches based on Cuba’s solid experience.

Both delegations stressed the importance of the two Agreements on cooperation in artistic education and between the National Libraries in which concrete steps are already being taken for the benefit of the two countries.

The Cuban deputy minister, who is also a member of parliament, explained Cuba’s initiatives such as the National Program for the Advancement of Women, the Policy for the comprehensive care of children, adolescents and youths and the National Project for the use of spare time.

She also elaborated on the draft Code of Children, Adolescents and Youths, stressing the importance of collaboration in all sectors in the education and training of the new generations.
