Lebanese Army mobilizes reinforcements toward Syrian border

Beyrouth, Feb 9 (Prensa Latina) Amid a tense calm on the border with Syria, the Lebanese Army carried out today a large mobilization of military reinforcements from the central and northern Bekaa to the north.

The Armed Forces announced the application of exceptional security measures along the border, in response to the presence of armed groups of the terrorist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, now in power in Syria.

The military entity confirmed the continuity of the response to the fire outbreaks launched from Syrian territory, in addition to the establishment of observation points, the carrying out of patrols and the construction of temporary barriers.

According to press reports, the Lebanese army deployed units in the strategic hills of Safawi-Qanafez and Harf al-Samaqah with the clear mandate of asserting control over the area.

On Sunday, the exchange of shelling between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militants and fighters from the Bekaa clan reached the outskirts of Jusiyah.

So far, the clan men adhere to the army’s decision not to respond to the source of the fire.

Three shells fell between the border towns of Sahlat al-May – al-Qasr and the al-Zakba neighborhood, from inside Syrian territory.

The National News Agency reported two Syrian drones shot down in the Jarmash area and another was hit by clan fighters near Qanafez, adjacent to the border.

According to the Al-Akhbar newspaper, shells and rockets hit the mountainous and forested area of Qald al-Sebaa, near a Lebanese army base.

Militants of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham entered Lebanese territory in the area of Jusiyah and took up position in a house, and fired towards the region of Mashari’a Al-Qaa and the plains leading to Hermel.

These clashes broke out on Thursday in the Syrian town of Hawik, adjacent to the Lebanese border, after the failure of an inter-clan initiative to organize and control the borders and limit smuggling through illegal crossings.

The sudden escalation by Hayaat Tahrir al-Sham led to clashes in which heavy and medium weapons were used, including artillery shells and drones, causing material damage and shells falling on Lebanese territory.

In addition, the attacks forced Lebanese clans to abandon their village inside the Syrian border towards the town of Hermel.

The Army leadership yesterday ordered military units deployed on the country’s northern and eastern borders to respond to sources of fire from Syrian territory towards the Lebanese side, in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic, Joseph Aoun.
