EU recommends Ukraine to ease martial law

Brussels, Feb 11 (Prensa Latina) Gert Jan Koopman, Director General of the European Commission (EC)'s Directorate General for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, suggested on Tuesday to Ukraine study the necessity and proportionality of the restrictions of martial law that are in effect now.

Addressing the conference “Ukraine’s accession to the European Union: shaping a transformation agenda,” Koopman acknowledged that martial law had changed certain democratic procedures and recommended that Verkhovna Rada lawmakers relax the imposed regime.

Ukraine will return to constitutional normality when the war is over and martial law is lifted, but I advise them to study now the necessity of the martial law restrictions that are into force, Koopman said, quoted by Le Soir local newspaper.

Koopman did not specify on which issues the EC expects changes from Ukraine.

Martial law and general mobilization were introduced in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and have been extended several times since then.

On February 1, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said presidential elections need to be held in Ukraine before ending 2025, especially if a ceasefire with the Russian Federation is concluded.
