UNESCO: Education in Cuba promotes peace and sustainable development

Havana, Feb 11 (Prensa Latina) UNESCO's Deputy Director General for Education, Stefanía Giannini, recognized the contribution of the Cuban educational system to peace and sustainable development and thanked Cuba for sharing its pedagogical experience during the opening of the 19th International Congress Pedagogy 2025, which will be held in Havana until February 13th.

The representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) highlighted the value of this event to draw up strategies in the educational field. She also asserted that education “is the most powerful tool for justice and peace” and in this area Cuba shows an endorsement of equity, inclusion and international cooperation.

According to Giannini, UNESCO provides information and knowledge that allows nations to implement the UN 2030 Agenda regarding inclusive and resilient educational systems that contribute to the promotion of lasting peace.

The Minister of Education of Cuba, Naima Trujillo, highlighted the strategic importance of the sector for sustainable development. “Education is a human right that enables and empowers other rights enshrined by the United Nations (UN),” said the Minister during the opening session of the event.

Trujillo called on education professionals from 32 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Asia and the United States to solve social problems and challenges that have increased in each nation. She cited among them equal access to technological development, knowledge, innovation, technology and its effects on production processes, so that they are sustainable and in harmony with the environment.

The minister urged those present to strengthen their commitment and action to “sustain and improve educational systems for the good of present and future generations,” based on “knowledge and the development of qualities, values ​​and capacities of individuals,” which in her words determines the development of a country.

Trujillo highlighted the effort and dedication of Cuban teachers, who defend high standards of their educational system, which is universal and free for all and at all stages of life despite the complexities experienced by Cuba.

“Cuba’s educational experience is supported by tens of thousands of people in 30 countries who have become literate using the “Yes, I can” teaching method as an expression of the Cuban Revolution’s vocation for solidarity,” the minister said.
