School dropout rate in the DR is higher among 15 to 17 year-olds

Santo Domingo, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) Minimizing the school dropout rate is today a challenge for authorities in the Dominican Republic, where 25 percent of young people between the ages of 15 and 17 drop out of school.

The Ten-Year Education Plan up to 2034 approved by the Ministry of Education (Minerd) reveals that out of every 100 boys aged 12 to 14, 10 are out of school, a figure that rises to 25 in the 15 to 17 age group.

The document indicates that although there has been an improvement in school attendance in recent years, the Covid-19 pandemic represented a setback in some school levels and study modalities, a situation that has not yet been resolved in the country.

He recognizes that school dropout is not only seen among teenagers and young people because in 2022-2023, out of every 100 children between six and 11 years old, six were out of school.

He explains that attendance at the primary level is key to improving basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills, fundamental for personal and professional development.

“It also forges values and habits necessary for a healthy life, peaceful coexistence and civic participation”, he argues.

Other challenges for the State are to ensure that students attend the level that corresponds to their age and that they remain in the classroom.

The ten-year plan states that among the most frequent reasons for missing classes are lack of motivation, lack of documents, family problems and disability.

It called attention to the lack of teacher supervision of these children.
