UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher stated that Sudan is facing a humanitarian emergency of alarming proportions, with famine raging, widespread sexual violence, and children being killed and injured.
Fletcher added that without immediate funding, two-thirds of refugee children will not have access to primary education, 4.8 million people in host communities will face severe food insecurity, and 1.8 million will not receive food assistance.
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in an internal war, following a power struggle between Army Chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The conflict has forced more than 11 million Sudanese to flee their homes in what experts call the world’s largest displacement crisis.
