Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded to remarks made by an official of the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), who urged the US government to counter Beijing’s economic influence in the region with a plan led by Washington.
“Mutually beneficial cooperation is the key to China-Latin America relations,” Guo said.
The spokesperson underscored that both are part of the “Global South” and have similar positions and complementary interests, making them natural partners.
He also affirmed that bilateral cooperation is based on the principles of joint consultation, common construction, and mutual benefit, while always respecting the needs and will of Latin American countries.
Guo reiterated that as sovereign and independent nations, they have the right to choose their development paths and cooperation partners.
During his recent visit to Central American countries, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized this cooperation, accusing China of interfering in the Panama Canal, while addressing other issues such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), 5G, cybersecurity, and the “One China” principle.
