In his account on the social network X, Caballero also conveyed the message of his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.
“I went today to congratulate the newly elected chairman of the African Union Commission, the foreign minister of the brother country, Djibouti, and to convey the congratulations of the Head of state and his Cuban counterpart. “A friend does not leave, he just changes places.”
During the meeting, the Caribbean diplomat told Youssouf that the work and friendship ties will continue, now at the regional level with such a prestigious organization like the African Union, according to information sent to Prensa Latina.
His election is also a recognition of Djibouti’s invaluable role in the peace processes in the region, he said.
Youssouf’s nomination took place on February 16 during the 38th Ordinary Session of the General Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU in Ethiopia.
The election process assessed his record, as well as those of the other candidates, former Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga and former Madagascar Foreign Minister Richard J. Randriamandrato.
The Assembly also selected Algerian Ambassador Salma Haddadi for the post of vice-chairperson of the AU Commission.
