Jose Marti works with Guatemalan imprint at Havana Book fair

Havana, Feb 19 (Prensa Latina) Jose Marti's close bond with Guatemala is ratified today at the Havana International Book Fair, where a publishing house of the Central American country presents works by Cuba's National Hero.

Visitors to the Guatemalan stand at the Morro-Cabaña Historic Military Park, the main venue of the literary event, may be surprised to find among its proposals the titles La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age) and Lucia Jerez, both from the pen of the renowned writer and pro-independence hero of the Caribbean country.

These are two volumes published under the seal of Culture Editorial, thanks to an agreement established with the Centro de Estudios Martianos, in Cuba, explained Genesis Ramos, proofreader and editor of the institution of the Central American country.

In declarations to Prensa Latina, Ramos added that her publishing house focuses on publishing the best of national literature, but also promotes some outstanding texts from Latin America, and it was decided to include Marti because of his close relationship with Guatemala, a country where the hero had a busy stay in 1877.

We have La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age), a book aimed at children, and Lucia Jerez, the only novel published by Jose Marti, a lesser-known work, and that is why we wanted to publish it, so that it would be better known, both in our country and here on the island, because some Cubans have come and told me they did not know of its existence, she said.

In addition, the copyeditor and publisher pointed out that they have in their catalog another book written by the Antillean writer, entitled Guatemala, composed of essays Marti wrote about that country.

Thus, the public attending the 33rd International Book Fair can approach the work of the National Hero as seen through a Guatemalan publishing house, which, as a distinctive element, is not commercializing these volumes, but gives them as gifts to those who are interested in its catalog.

Ramos also expressed interest in continuing with this participation in the literary festival. “In the beginning, the directors of the publishing house always came to present a book, but now we are already with the stand and we hope to continue, maybe next year we can return.”
