Mali: 34 confirmed dead in recent Islamist attack

Bamako, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) confirmed the death of 34 people in northeastern Mali, in a recent armed attack of the group known as the Islamic State of the Sahel, local media reported here.

As announced the day before, another 30 `persons were wounded in the ambush, which occurred earlier this month against a convoy carrying a hundred civilians, escorted by the Malian Army, near the town of Kobe, in the northeast of the country. The convoy of civilian vehicles was carrying miners from Niger and traders from Mali, who were traveling on a road between the towns of Gao and Ansongo.

The organization urged the Malian authorities to investigate the incident and to ensure that their security forces provide better protection to civilians at risk. The note added that the identity of the attacking group has not yet been confirmed, although the Malian army issued a statement on the same day of the attack, in which it put the number of civilians killed at 25 and thirteen wounded, and attributed the events to the group Islamic State of the Sahel.

Attacks against civilians in this Malian region are now common without the military authorities having control of the situation, political analysts said on Friday.

At least four people were injured today, three of them in serious condition, after an improvised explosive device exploded as a civilian truck passed by in the Nara region of eastern Mali, near the border with Mauritania.
