The Legislative Administration Council approved on Tuesday to pass a resolution presented by the president of the Assembly, Viviana Veloz, for the plenary to create an occasional commission to deal with a possible modification of article 303 of the Constitution.
The objective is to strengthen dollarization in the country, recognizing the dollar as the official currency, said the Legislative in a statement.
The initiative was presented in 2021 by former Assemblyman Pabel Muñoz, who is currently mayor of Quito, the capital city.
The president of the Assembly at that time, Virgilio Saquicela, sent the proposed amendment to the Constitutional Court, which has already approved it.
The proposal to modify the Ecuadorian supreme law as an initiative of Veloz, and previously of Muñoz, both from the Citizen Revolution (RC), comes just before the second round of elections.
On April 13, Luisa Gonzalez, of that organization, will run against the current president and candidate for reelection, Daniel Noboa.
Although the dollar has been the legal currency in the country for 25 years, in each electoral process the representatives of the CR are accused of wanting to de-dollarize the country, however, they have ruled it out.
In an interview to a local radio this morning, Gonzalez reiterated her commitment with the maintenance and strengthening of dollarization as a main pillar of the economy.
