Mexican government reports drop in intentional homicides

Mexico City, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) Mexican authorities reported today a 24.9 percent reduction in the daily average number of victims of intentional homicides under the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, according to preliminary figures.

The executive secretary of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa, stated in a press conference that the figure went from an average 86.93 in September 2024, to 65.29 by February 24.

Regarding location of fatal crimes nationwide in the second month of the year, she mentioned that 54.37 of assassinations concentrate in seven places, namely Guanajuato (15.4), State of Mexico (7.5), Baja California (6.7), Sinaloa (6.6), Michoacán (6.5), Tabasco (6.0) and Sonora (5.7).

Figueroa also highlighted a 28.7 percent decrease from 2018 (100.5 victims) and 2025 (71.6, according to preliminary data).

The current administration is implementing a national security strategy based on four axes of action: addressing the causes, consolidating the National Guard, strengthening intelligence and investigation, and coordination with the federal entities.
