Despite the complex situation that Cuba is going through and that affects Prensa Latina, this institution does not give up its mission of providing timely and truthful information, as well as being at the service of the truth.
According to the vice president of information for the media, Luisa María González, the current commitment lies in persisting, looking for new ways and opening gaps that allow progress.
In the annual review of the work done in 2024, she informed that among this year’s priorities are increasing commercial work to raise income and get closer to the goal of self-financing, in addition to moving to a new headquarters.
Referring to the challenges of the institution, González explained that 2024 was complex for Prensa Latina, due to the difficult economic conditions that the country is facing and that have had an impact on the headquarters in Havana and in more than 30 correspondent offices on all continents.
The news agency also intends to continue “to work with our large and very diverse team so that it becomes increasingly efficient and competent,” she added.
The vice president stressed that the flow of news did not stop even in very complex moments, such as the disconnections of the National Power System and Hurricane Rafael.
Instead, she pointed out that work formulas were established between the central office and the offices abroad to edit and produce news.
During the debate, journalists from various generations acknowledged that despite the difficulties, Prensa Latina has remained vital, and insisted on the importance of diversifying the forms of financing and demanded the presence of the media at international events.
Yaquelín González, an official from the ideological department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) explained that at this time, the institution is part of an experiment that is being developed in more than a dozen media outlets nationwide, which will allow Prensa Latina to improve its economic condition.
González stressed that ways have been sought to defend Prensa Latina, its 35 correspondent offices, and continue to bring “the truth of Cuba to the world.”
Online, correspondents ratified the commitment to continue to be the voice of the countries of the Global South, thus continuing with their mission of reporting in a timely and truthful manner, despite internal and external challenges.
