The tribute will take place at 3:00 p.m. local time in the Audiovisual Room of the Cuban Art Building. It will reissue the systematic tributes previously dedicated by the hostess and cultural promoter Nisia Agüero to national artists, and where she invited this time the National Literature Prize winner, Nancy Morejón, according to the Museum.
Portocarrero (February 24, 1912-April 7, 1985) had Afro-Cuban roots among his main pictorial themes. Author of ¨Interiors of Cerro¨, ¨Feasts and Figures for a Contemporary Mythology¨, he was awarded the National Painting Prize in 1951 for his work ¨Homage to Trinidad¨.
This marked the beginning of a series of landscapes inspired by the Cuban capital, the so-called “Landscapes of Havana”.
Another of the motifs of his creations was Cuban Santeria, a theme to which he dedicated another of his collections. He also dedicated his work to the popular festivals of the island, with the series Carnivals (1970-1971).
His works are exhibited in various museums around the world and he has also received various awards, including the Sambra International Prize, awarded during the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1963, the Order of Culture of Poland, and in 1982 the Aztec Eagle, the highest decoration granted by the Mexican government.
